Producing safe food

Basic  food safety requirements for exported products that are consumed as food  are detailed by MPI and summarised on the  Official requirements for Food Safety web page. Information specifically on MRL levels permitted  in New Zealand and in other countries  can also be accessed  on MPI's site.

However many customers both New Zealand retailers and Overseas importers require a more comprehensive level of  Food Safety standards and requirements . These are documented as private standards.

The most common private standard used in New Zealand is Global Gap  and the New Zealand specific New Zealand gap.

A new Food Bill is currently being considered by Parliament. This Food Bill will influence how food is grown and sold for consumption in New Zealand and for export.  Latest information on the Food Bill is available here
